Ronaldo's 980th Goal: Twenty Shots Short of 1,000 at Al Nassr
      Al Nassr 3-0 Al Diriyah · 9 October 2026
      Twenty Goals From 1,000

Cristiano Ronaldo turned a spilled save into the 980th goal of his career on Friday night in Riyadh — and in the same ninety minutes, Al Nassr moved level at the top of the Saudi Pro League. Twenty goals now stand between him and a number nobody in the professional game has reached.

There is a particular kind of goal that only becomes available to a player late in his career: the one that is not created, but claimed. It requires a striker to be standing in exactly the right place at exactly the moment a teammate’s shot is palmed away, and to have done nothing at all for the previous two seconds. Cristiano Ronaldo scored one on Friday, in the 23rd minute, and it moved him to 980 goals in a career that began in 2002.

The save came from Kingsley Coman. Diriyah’s goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah parried Coman’s shot but could not hold it, and the ball dropped inside the penalty area in front of an onrushing Ronaldo, who finished from close range. It is not a goal that will be replayed for its technique. It is a goal that will be replayed for the timing.

Two years ago he would have taken that chance on the half-run, before the rebound had settled. He took it from two feet away, because at 41 that is now where he stands.

What the 980th goal actually demonstrates

What changed about how he scores

The numbers behind the 980 are worth sitting with. Al Nassr signed him in 2023 and he has scored 101 goals in 113 appearances for the club — a rate close to 0.9 a game, and higher in the league alone, where he has 78 in 82. Across the whole of 2026 he has 23 in all competitions, split between Al Nassr and Portugal.

Those are the totals of a player who has redefined himself once already. The early Ronaldo was a winger who beat defenders and finished from impossible angles. This version is something else: shorter bursts, fewer attempted dribbles, more of his scoring coming from positions where the only question is whether the ball arrives. Friday’s goal was the cleanest example of it, because it involved no run at all — Coman did the running, and Ronaldo did only the arriving.

It is also, quietly, the harder way to score. A breakaway can be missed. A rebound in the six-yard box, given the anticipation to reach it, is close to unforgiving.

      The night in full

Al Nassr returned from a 25-day international break to a side that had drifted: a 1-1 draw away to Al-Khaleej before the pause, and a 0-4 defeat to Al Ain in the AFC competition in between. The mood in the press had moved beyond the pitch. Ronaldo had left Portugal’s camp mid-break after disagreements with the national team coach, and the coverage of that week in Riyadh was about as unfriendly as it gets.

Postecoglou’s version of events was simply that the captain was in good spirits. Twenty-three minutes in, he had the only opinion that mattered.

      35’Samú Costa — header, João Félix corner2-0

The margin flattered them slightly. Diriyah, in a 5-4-1 built around Darwin Núñez, had more forays into Al Nassr’s half than the scoreline suggests and put eight shots on target to the hosts’ thirteen. But eight of those thirteen Al Nassr shots were on target, and Diriyah keeper Bento was beaten three times. The result was the most efficient attacking performance of the season.

Ronaldo nearly had a second. Félix played a pass that sent him clear in the first half and he dragged it wide, the kind of miss that lingers because the move was good. In the second half he created again, sliding a ball through for Mané that Bento saved.

      What the win leaves

      • 19 points from 8 — level with Al Qadsiah, ahead of them on goal difference.
      • Al Hilal sit a point behind with a game in hand.
      • Al Qadsiah beat Al Kholood 5-0 the same day; Al Ahli won 4-0 at Al Fateh.
      • Next: away to Al Ahli on 15 October.

Three of the four leading clubs won by at least three goals on the same afternoon. The title race is not a two-team race, and one night of it did not settle anything.

      What 1,000 would actually mean

No player has scored 1,000 goals in official senior competition. The number is often adjusted — friendly included, and Ronaldo’s own total moved significantly depending on who was counting — but on the strict ledger of club and international goals, 1,000 has never been reached. That is why 980 is worth more than a round number: it is close enough to be credible and still far enough away to be a genuine record.

At roughly 20 goals a season, twenty more would take him a full campaign. The realistic path is a return to European club football, which he has not had since Manchester United. He is 41. That is not a rhetorical observation; it is the entire arithmetic.

Which is what makes the rebound on Friday worth more than the three points.

      Al Nassr’s run-in

Nothing about Friday suggests this was a one-off. Al Nassr have taken thirteen of the eighteen points available to them since the end of August, having spent a stretch of the season fourth and then third. The simplest reading of the table is that this is a three-team race, and that Al Nassr’s remaining fixtures will decide it — with Al Hilal having a game in hand to make up, and Al Qadsiah having already dropped four goals on Al Kholood the same afternoon.

Ronaldo’s club travels to Al Ahli on 15 October, then into a run of fixtures that will decide the title. The arithmetic on 1,000 is not generous at this level, and nobody involved is pretending otherwise.

What was the score, and did Al Nassr win the league?

Al Nassr beat Al Diriyah 3-0 at Al-Awwal Park on Friday 9 October 2026. They moved level with Al Qadsiah on 19 points from eight matches, ahead of them on goal difference, with Al Hilal a point behind having played one fewer. They are joint top, not champions — the season has eight rounds still to run.

Did Ronaldo actually score his 980th goal?

Yes. It was the 23rd-minute opener, finished from close range after Kingsley Coman’s shot was parried but not held by the Diriyah goalkeeper. It moved him to 980 in 1,337 official appearances, and to 20 short of 1,000. It was his first goal since 9 September, against Abha.

      Who scored the other two?

Samú Costa headed in from a Jóo Félix corner in the 35th minute, and Kingsley Coman finished one-on-one in the 77th with a Máne assist. Ronaldo set up the second goal with a headed assist and nearly scored a fourth himself in the second half.

Why is the ninth-minute Ronaldo goal not in the record books?

It was disallowed. Ronaldo broke through and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper in the ninth minute, but the assistant referee flagged offside. The 980th goal therefore came 14 minutes later than it might have, off Coman’s saved shot rather than his own run.

Which Al Nassr shirt did he score in?

The 2026/27 home shirt — yellow with navy trim — with RONALDO 7 on the back. The adult cut runs XS to 6XL at $42.48, and the gold-collar issue of the same shirt is $39.57. The 2025/26 KAFD-era version, the kids’ fits and the navy 2026/27 away are all in stock below.

What happened with Portugal during the international break?

Ronaldo left the Portugal camp mid-break after disagreements with the national team coach over his role, which dominated the coverage in the days before Friday’s match. He has since said he does not intend to retire from international football. He has 143 international goals in 229 senior caps — the men’s record for both, on UEFA’s running figures.

Has anyone scored 1,000 official goals?

No. On the strict ledger of club and international goals, nobody has reached 1,000. The figure is sometimes adjusted to include friendlies, which moves the totals considerably, but 980 is the number tracked against the official record — and 20 more would put him 20 clear of a mark no one has touched.

Score, timings, lineup and the table are taken from the post-match reports of Arab News, AS USA, The Sports Encounter and the Saudi Pro League match record, cross-checked against Chinese and Brazilian/Hispanic-language coverage.
